I'm not too concerned with sound quality. I'd have analog mixing digital recording and controller all in one and It wouldn't cost me any more then what I'd spend on a 16 out interface to run a mixer. If I wanted to go farther I'd simply buy a digital mixer. I cured the need for the hands on method of mixing by simply buying a multichannel controller. I can run all the outs through a mixer if I chose to, but like I said, as Digital programs improved, it quit making sense both quality was and financially.

I run 3 of the older M-Audio 1010LT boards which have 8 analog ins and outs.

I'd be sure you can get the quality you want with your Behringer before wasting your time going 16 channels. There are much better ways of spending that money to get audio improvements like better preamps and mics. If you're going to spend the money on a high end interface just to have the extra outs, it doesn't make allot of sense spending that money just to match it to an old boat anchor. The highest number of outputs you'll likely find on a 16 channel interface is 8 outs or less. Companies like Motu, Focusrite, and others make a base units and also make slave units that have the expanded ports. I recorded analog using that older model for 30+ years and It took me a good 10 years to switch over and abandon the old and fully embrace the new.ДЄnyway, if you want to have the ability of 16 in and 16 out, you need to buy a quality interface and its matching expansion units. Allot of musicians still think its a good viable model too. Most still think modern recording is how the Beatles recorded to 4 track, simply because that's all they are familiar with.

Computer monitors and DAW programs used in a Hollywood movie isn't sexy with the public yet. You wont see Hollywood pushing the digital model for a long time either even though its what they use in they're industry now too. You don't and wont find the glorification of digital like you do with the older obsolete model, simply because it hasn't been around very long compared to analog which has been around since 1877. The reality is, the rise of digital, its low cost vs quality is what made the older model to collapse. They have a vision of what a studio entails based on older vintage models before Digital became dominant and think that's the path to superior sound quality. These are things many simply have to learn first hand. If I had a high end studio mixer like a Nerve or something comparable, It might be worthwhile mixing analog to get the coloration from those circuits but that's about it. I had made enough A/B comparisons using both methods to make it obvious using an analog mixer made no sense. I really did give analog mixing a major effort too, main reason being, I had allot of hardware effects I could use.ДЄs DAW programs and plugin quality improved, it quit making sense. Didn't take me long to figure out there was more loss then gain using that method and eventually went to 100% digital until the music was completed and either burned to CD or uploaded. I used a Soundcraftsman mixer which was pretty good too. It seemed a logical way of doing things at first and the early DAW programs like Cakewalk 7 and Cubase 5.0 only had basic plugins. When I first switched from analog to digital, I used a mixer at first.

That all changed and DAW programs became sophisticated. When digital recording first started you had to use a mixer because DAW programs were ultra primitive so you essentially used a hard drive in place of tape. When you recorded analog, you had to use a mixer. Unless the mixer is stellar in sound quality its tough to even preserve sound quality no less improve things. You have to realize, converting digital to analog then back to digital again, adds two additional steps of conversion, likely to cause more signal degeneration then anything you'd gain from mixing analog. If you're looking for sound quality you're much better off mixing within the box. If you were recording to tape I'd say go for it, but all you'd be doing by looping a signal through an old boat anchor like that is to introduce noise and tone sucking and the EQ's are not very good so you aren't going to gain much with them. Its not what I'd consider to be a very good board for mixing. I have one of those Sunn Mixers from that era I used to use as a sub mixer for drums. A 40+ year old mixer is likely to have allot of caps drying up and is becoming noisy. That mixing is from the 70's and is designed for live PA work. What I suggest is using the Behringer as is till you figure out whether its even worth while.

If you record to digital, then play the tracks back through an analog board, then what?ДЄre you going to record back to digital again?
